  1. This  HELP  article is  90 lines  long.

  3. VARITALE COMMANDS -- A BRIEF TUTORIAL
  4.  
  5. Whenever you see the  COMMAND>  prompt,
  6. it means VariTale is waiting for you to
  7. enter one of these commands:
  8.  
  9. BROWSE, BYE,  HELP,  MAP,  PICK,  READ,
  10. START, TIME or WIDTH.
  11.  
  12. You don't have to type  the whole word.
  13. Just enough to be recognizable.  One or
  14. two letters is usually enough.
  15.  
  16. There are some other commands, known as
  17. the "librarian" commands, but those are
  18. reserved  for  the person  who runs the
  19. VariTale  library.   They are described
  20. in the instructions sent with VariTale,
  21. so we won't discuss them now.

  24. ABOUT THE COMMANDS
  25.  
  26. BROWSE lets you  see  what's  inside  a
  27. VariTale  book.   You can  explore  the
  28. table  of  contents  without  having to
  29. read the chapters.   This is a good way
  30. to see the various  branches  the story
  31. is taking.  It also  provides the chap-
  32. ter numbers,  which you'll need to know
  33. if you want to  jump into the middle of
  34. the book.
  35.  
  36. BYE  disconnects  you from VariTale and
  37. returns you  to the system you were on,
  38. originally.  Sometimes, though,  you'll
  39. run out of time while in  VariTale,  in
  40. which case, you'll get a count-down for
  41. each of the last 5 minutes, after which
  42. you'll be disconnected automatically.

  44. HELP  is what you're reading right now.
  45.  
  46. MAP  is an  alternative to  BROWSE.  It
  47. shows how the chapters refer to others.
  48.  
  49. PICK shows you the various books in the
  50. VariTale library,  along with a few in-
  51. dictions of their  popularity.  You can
  52. then  pick  one  of the books to either
  53. READ or BROWSE.
  54.  
  55. READ lets you read the book that you've
  56. selected with the PICK command.
  57.  
  58. When you've read to the end  of a chain
  59. of chapters,  you'll have the chance to
  60. add your own, although there is a maxi-
  61. mum of  five alternatives  to any chap-
  62. ter.  Type carefully,  though;  you can
  63. edit while  entering your chapter,  but
  64. once you've saved it, you won't be able
  65. to change it again.

  67. While you're  entering  a chapter,  you
  68. can use the special  *  edit command to
  69. get back to the  COMMAND> prompt.  This
  70. allows you to check earlier chapters of
  71. the story,  even as you write.   Please
  72. take care to get the facts right.  It's
  73. a courtesy that will be appreciated.

  75. START is used to  start a book  of your
  76. own.  Note  that there is limited space
  77. in the VariTale library,  so wait until
  78. you have  a really good idea before you
  79. use this command.

  81. WIDTH  sets your  screen's  width.  The
  82. default is  80  characters.   The word-
  83. wrapping  doesn't attempt to format the
  84. text you'll see,  but it  does  prevent
  85. words from being chopped in two.
